Aging Gracefully: How Personal Training Can Improve Flexibility and Reduce Pain

As we get older, our bodies tend to become less flexible, leading to reduced mobility, chronic pain, and an increased risk of falls and injuries. But, what if I told you that you don't have to accept these as normal signs of aging? The good news is that personal training can make a huge difference in improving flexibility and reducing the risk of injury for folks in their 60s, 70s, and beyond. So, if you're in that age range and feeling a little creaky, don't worry! There is a way to help you feel better and move more easily.

Flexibility in your 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s
One of the most inspiring things I see in my clients is when they can reclaim their joy and access mobility they never thought was possible. I would like to share a story of a client that didn’t start working out more consistently and seriously when she was 70. When we started working together, she had some serious knee and back pain that she was pushing through and working around. Over the last eight years of working together, she has gotten stronger, healthier, more flexible, and more pain-free than she was in her 50s, 60s, or even 70s! She's now 88 and still thriving, able to play on the floor with her grandchildren and even go snowshoeing. She is the perfect example of how transformative working with someone to optimize movements can be rather than trying to push through generalized workouts on your own. Starting to exercise and work on your flexibility at any age can make a significant difference in your quality of life. Even just maintaining your current level of flexibility can help you avoid injury and improve your ability to do the things you love as you age.

Why working with a personal trainer can help

If you're over 50 and looking for techniques to age gracefully, or if you're living with chronic pain and looking for a solution, working with a personal trainer can be crucial. Here are some of the reasons:

  1. Customized workouts: A personal trainer can create a workout routine that is tailored to your specific needs and fitness level. This ensures that you're not pushing yourself too hard and that you're getting the most out of the work you’re doing

  2. Reduced risk of injury: A personal trainer can help you develop a routine that strengthens your muscles and joints, making you less likely to get injured. They can also craft a routine around muscle deficits to strengthen areas to reduce chronic pain

  3. Accountability and motivation: It can be challenging to stay motivated to exercise at any age, especially if you're experiencing chronic pain or have never exercised before. A personal trainer can help keep you accountable and motivated by setting goals and providing feedback and encouragement. Sometimes the work you would do with a trainer doesn’t feel like a workout at all, so having someone to identify your progress and understand the importance of what you’re building on can motivate you more to keep going

  4. Expert guidance: Personal trainers are experts in movement, but that doesn’t just mean they can provide guidance on proper form and technique. They can adapt movements and exercises on the fly to better fit individual needs during a session. This not only prevents discouragement but optimizes balanced strength and mobility

If you're over 50 or living with chronic pain, working with a personal trainer can be a game-changer. A customized workout routine can help improve your flexibility, reduce your risk of injury, and provide accountability and motivation. With the right approach, you can make progress and feel better than you ever have.
